OAKVILLE – At first glance, a lot of people would think that bridging hockey and boxing through cross training promotes violence in hockey, but the owners of a newly-opened Oakville training facility are hoping to prove otherwise.

Mississauga’s Augi DeOliveira, Doug Small and Steve and Amanda Cabral have partnered to create the Just Train It and Just Shoot It training facility that celebrated its grand opening this afternoon on Iroqouis Shore Rd.

DeOliveira and Small originally opened Just Shoot It, a single-pad hockey training centre in Mississauga three years ago, but decided to open a second facility to serve Oakville’s hockey market.

“This is a huge hockey community and we wanted to integrate with a different concept and training facility that goes with it,” said DeOliveira.

“If you look at the demographics in Oakville, one in every five kids plays hockey. There are also great hockey teams here, most of them ranked near the top of their division.”

DeOliveira feels that players can use boxing as a way to develop their strength, hand-eye co-ordination and endurance.

At the same time, Steve Cabral was training boxers out of HUF Gym in Port Credit and was interested in opening Oakville’s only Boxing Ontario-sanctioned club.

The newly-opened facility consists of a single pad of ice where players can work on their shooting, goaltending and body checking techniques, and a boxing gym with all the amenities such as a ring, punching bags and fitness equipment.

DeOliveira feels that players can use boxing as a way to develop their strength, hand-eye co-ordination and endurance.

Meanwhile, Cabral feels that parents can fit in a workout while their children practice on the ice.

“I’ve noticed whenever I’m at hockey rinks, the parents would go to Tim Hortons and come back with coffee,” Cabral said.

“There’s nothing wrong with Timmy’s, but I think that time could be utilized a little better. What better way than to get a one-hour workout?”

Notable dignitaries such as Canadian heavyweight boxing great George Chuvalo, Mississauga middleweight boxer Tebor Brosch, New York Islanders forward Casey Cizikas, Canadian women’s hockey gold medalist Becky Kellar and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton were on hand for this afternoon’s festivities.

Just Train It and Just Shoot It is located at 505 Iroquois Shore Rd. near Eighth Line and North Service Rd. E.
